A quick word about lifestyle

If you’re like the rest of us in this wacky surf-community, you might spend an ungodly amount of time watching, reminiscing and thinking about surfing. Many times, the thought process concludes with a desire for more: a bigger wave, heavier barrel, a turn with more finesse… I’ve seen many of my surfer friends and family take what seems like the next logical step towards these goals. Video surf coaching with pointers on technique, surf-skate training with cones in a parking lot, and maybe most logical of all, surf more. I’ve got a theory on something that’ll improve surfing by bounds and heaps more than any of these techniques combined: a focus on lifestyle-improvement. Now, take a moment to look at your lifestyle from a 3rd-person perspective.

Anything that could be changed for the better?

I can almost guarantee that the answer to that is a resounding yes, as we all struggle with some aspect of our health. Based on this assumption, I wrote a letter to my future patients while I was working as a surf-medic in Indonesia. The inspiration came from a feeling of wholeness while I was there. For those weeks on that trip, my circle was filled up. Every day, I was eating fantastic whole-foods, exercising my entire body and challenging my mind. On top of this, I was sleeping like a rock after a day full of activity, and I could feel the friendships forming with the people around me. I even tried out one of those supplement powders that are all the rage these days - made me feel great! (note: I found out later that they loaded that stuff with caffeine, which probably explained the boost I felt - a better explanation than all the “nutrients” in that green chalky powder…)
